Sculpture Picnic Trail '94

A fresh air event for 400 nature, art and picnic lovers. The environmental arts project began in a series of Playscheme workshops and led up to a public land art event day with participatory activities.

A series of workshops with a large range of participants, in playgroups, schools and in public, explored aligned issues and constructed scarecrow sculptures from re-cycled materials. The conclusion - a site specific celebratory land art event which occurs after a week of artists preparations.

On route participants take part in activities which help fill in their trail form. Environmental questions are supplemented by the making of artwork - from bark rubbing, tree aging and habitat spotting to landscape sketching, water colouring and stone watching.

Micro-local place names, such as Fox Clough, Elysium and Hades, are spelled out in natural and found materials such as stone, wood, branches, leaves and other objects, representing the human mapping of the landscape as 3 dimensional objects on the ground.

The Sculpture Picnic Trail rounded off the holidays perfectly; the constant surprises which the scarecrows led us past, the homely soup which welcomed us after the drenching of the morning, the storytelling which captivated us all, and the tree planting made a rich feast of delight which we will remember for a long time
